Basic types of body movement
From an anatomical point of view, our body can do wonders, and sometimes it seems that the body has no boundaries. Just look at professional gymnasts. Some of them seem to be made of rubber. In fact, it is a matter of regular training. We know these basic body movements:
Flexion / bend - reduces the angle between two bones (eg bend in the knee) Extension / extension - the opposite of bending. Straightens and thus increases the angle of the joint (eg movement of the upper limb backwards) Rotation - the whole limb moves around the center axis in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction Abduction - movement away from the center line of the body (eg movement of the hand sideways with the palm facing forward) Adduction - movement towards the center line of the body; the opposite of abduction Circumduction - all 5 previous movements together (for example, when rotating the entire upper limb) Protrusion - forward movement (eg sledge) Retrusion - backward movement; the opposite of protrusion Elevation - upward movement (eg lifting the arm) Depression - moving down; opposite elevation
